Review of The Housemaid's Secret by Freida McFadden

Book Blurb

“Don’t go in the guest bedroom.” A shadow falls on Douglas Garrick’s face as he touches the door with his fingertips. “My wife… she’s very ill.” As he continues showing me their incredible penthouse apartment, I have a terrible feeling about the woman behind closed doors. But I can’t risk losing this job—not if I want to keep my darkest secret safe…

It’s hard to find an employer who doesn’t ask too many questions about my past. So I thank my lucky stars that the Garricks miraculously give me a job, cleaning their stunning penthouse with views across the city and preparing fancy meals in their shiny kitchen. I can work here for a while, stay quiet until I get what I want.

It’s almost perfect. But I still haven’t met Mrs Garrick, or seen inside the guest bedroom. I’m sure I hear her crying. I notice spots of blood around the neck of her white nightgowns when I’m doing laundry. And one day I can’t help but knock on the door. When it gently swings open, what I see inside changes everything

That’s when I make a promise. After all, I’ve done this before. I can protect Mrs Garrick while keeping my own secrets locked up safe.

Douglas Garrick has done wrong. He is going to pay. It’s simply a question of how far I’m willing to go…

Best Book Editors Review

This one continues almost directly from The Housemaid. I made a blunder and didn’t realise they were a series. I started reading this one first. I was advised to stop halfway through and read The Housemaid first—so I’m passing that advice on. You can read this as a stand-alone, but there are little homages throughout that hark back to the first book.

We follow Millie into another post, but it’s a very brief spit and polish before she gets sacked, and we’re pulled straight into her next position. It isn’t a happy household, and mystery lurks across every stair tread.

Millie should mind her own business and concentrate on bleaching the loo—but she doesn’t—and therein lies her downfall.

Another fantastic story in the same style as The Housemaid with the same fantastic writing and description. Millie isn’t the only character that follows over to this book, and we reconnect with an old friend.

Fabulous writing, easy reading, and a plot that keeps you guessing. What more do you need?

Another page turner

Top Ten reasons why I love Housemaid’s Secret (you really should read it now!!)

10. Snippets of information here and there. Makes you think and interesting enough to want to look it up.

9. Twists galore ….well…what else can one expect from a Freida book?

8. Enough suspense to keep you turning the pages

7. Great as a stand alone book though it would be enjoyable if one read The Housemaid first, not a must though.

6. Seamlessly woven beginning, middle and end.

5. Humor. Some really Lol moments throughout.

4. Short chapters and these are always welcome but intriguing to keep it going. So tough to stop once you start reading.

3. Just the right amount of details whether it is for characters (old and new), background, situations…no elaborate descriptions.

2. ” A good book has no ending ” R.D. Cummings. Just like it was with The Housemaid, this one too will stay with me long after I’ve finished it. Would love Housemaid #3 and more!!😊

1. Easiest 5 star rating I’ve ever given a book.
